How does it work?
The hypnotherapist does not usually attend in Hospital with the mother to be. Instead, the certified hypnotherapist works with the client at the clinic, and often provides resources and plenty of encouragement for her to practice self-hypnosis frequently.
Did you know?
In the 1950’s a surgeon in Indiana, James Esdaile, performed 75 operations using only hypnotic techniques with the patients. All were confirmed as being ‘pain free.’
In 1950’s Britain, hypnosis alone was successfully used in many cases of caesarian surgery.
Pain Management, Self-Hypnosis, Letting go Fears
Grantly Dick Read, a British obstetrician wrote “Natural Childbirth” in 1933. In it he asserts:
“Fear of pain causes resistance to the working muscles of the uterus, increasing tension and causing pain ... even mild anxiety can make a women tense ... A tense woman has a tense outlet to the uterus, giving rise to the saying, “Tense Woman, Tense Cervix.”
Hypnosis and a more comfortable birth
Hypnosis is a safe and effective way to decrease your perception of pain during the birthing process. With practice, many clients experience little to no pain, and may only experience the feeling of pressure. A survey of clients of Midwifery Consulting Services list an average of “6” on a 1-10 pain scale for their births (10 = most pain).
Although no method can promise pain-free birth, hypnosis helps all women to perceive the pain less, whilst helping to increase coping skills.
Using Self-Hypnosis
You may learn self-hypnosis, and by practicing it several times a day prior to the birth, you will be able to use this technique to distort time, such as deceasing the duration of contraction discomfort. With this technique, you may also access other techniques to help you to cope more effectively with the various stages of the birth process, such as creating anesthesia (absence of pain and touch) or analgesia (absence of pain).
Controlling Fear
Some women periodically experience fear surrounding the birth process. With hypnosis, you may learn to adjust the way you feel, and learn to become more relaxed, more joyful and more confident in your bodies ability to do what it needs to do automatically. You may also create positive change in your relationship to choosing breastfeeding for your baby, your energy levels and your calmness in your new role of motherhood.
Breech Babies
It is known that when in hypnotic trance, we are able to create a form of communication with baby; it has been effective in getting a breech baby to turn anytime from during the session, to around 72 hours later .
Note: babies usually turn between 28 - 32 weeks automatically; this technique is only for those babies that have exceeded this period.
